SHOULD CHRISTIANS WEAR TATTOOS?

SHOULD CHRISTIANS WEAR TATTOOS OR DEFACE THEIR BODIES

THE FIRST THING IS TO REALIZE THAT YOU DON’T BELONG TO YOU OR THE WORLD:

No one would buy a house and put graffiti all over it & God don’t want you marking up his house.

1 Cor 3:16-17 (16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

1 Cor 6:19-20 (19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

The tattoo is also considered the mark of depravity by many tattoo books. Studies have been done that indicate a high percentage of deviant behaviors and troubled persons that were tattooed. Studies have also been done that link tattoos to homosexuality, lesbianism, and gross sexual perversion. Statements made in many of the tattoo books bear this out. Recent studies on today’s tattooed young people indicate:

1) They are nearly four times more likely to engage in sexual intercourse;

2) Over two times more likely to experience alcohol related problems;

3) Nearly two times more likely to use illegal drugs;

4) Over two times more likely to express violent behavior; and

5) Over two times more likely to drop out of high school.

It is a well-known fact that tattooing runs a risk of acquiring any number of deadly diseases, including Hepatitis C and AIDS. The reason is because the needle that is used to tattoo punctures the skin 3,000 times a minute. In an hour, that would be 180,000 times that puncture wounds provide a potential path to a deadly disease. Not only that, but it is also well documented that tattoo shops are not regulated by the government to uphold medical standards. Also, many tattoo artists do not inform their clients of possible infection from the needle or the ink.

The Mayo Clinic sounds a warning about commercial tattooing: “Few states have hygienic regulations to ensure safe tattooing practices in commercial tattoo parlors, and even fewer monitor and enforce standards”. Tattoos can cause many chronic skin disorders such as sarcoid, keloid scarring, allergic dermatitis, photosensitivity reactions, psoriasis, and tumors. Finally, the Holy Bible gives a real warning about this sort of procedure (Psalm.38: 5-8).

Lev 19:27-28 (27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord.

Many will say that this was for Israel & the Old Testament and doesn’t apply to us today. This was a moral warning from the Lord “I am the Lord” not to defile your bodies. The heathen did it and they still do but God demands distinction between Christians & unbelievers. There were some of the laws (prohibitions) that were directed exclusively towards Israel, yet the moral laws are timeless. Notice some of the moral laws and see that they still apply. Don’t place a stumbling block in front of a blind man, don’t sell or prostitute your daughters, fear your parents, honor the elderly, & etc. These and more are moral laws. Then there were civil or dietary laws which applied to Israel. They couldn’t eat catfish or fish without scales, hogs, plow with different types of beast, plant a field with various seeds, or wear clothing made of assorted fabrics. Why you might ask, God wanted his people to look, act, dress, farm uniquely from the surrounding heathen nations. Today we can eat whatever we want virtually;

1 Tim 4:3-5 (3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

God still demands Christians to live a lifestyle that separates us from the world, but wants it to be more than our gardens and diets. We are changed from within & it should reflect on the outside as well.

2 Cor 6:14-18 (14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Notice that we are commanded to “come out & be separate” then God will receive us as his children. God wants us to “think & not Ink”. He doesn’t want us to be identified or associated with gangsters, prisoners, prostitutes (they call it Tramp Stamping) homosexuals or any other markings that reflects the world and not God’s Kingdom.

I am also curious that there are those who profess to be Christians & cover themselves with tattoos and body piercings. Some even go so far as to say that Jesus wore tattoos.

Rev 19:15-16 (15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND Lord OF Lords.

Revelation is a book of prophecy that speaks through symbolism & here it is found once again. His name was written on his vesture (garment) & on his thigh. If this were a tattoo then where did he get it? It wasn’t on him when he ascended, was there a tattoo parlor in heaven where he has been seated for the past 2000 years?  As you study the other verses you will discover that the vesture was soaked in his blood & his thigh represented strength. It was written on his garment & not tattooed on his body. Jesus would never do anything he forbids his children to do. Lastly, the only marks on Jesus are the scares from the nails that held him to the cross for a lost world & the stripes upon his back where he purchased our healings.

1 Peter 2:24   Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

We find that body mutilation (cuttings, piercings, and bloodletting) was often practiced by pagans.

1 Kings 18:27-28 (27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

Mark 5:1-5 (5 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

Satan wants God’s people to disobey the Lord & use their bodies to promote every evil work.

1 Cor 6:13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

When people have wild parties, smoke or use drugs, drink alcohol, speak profanity, fight, murder, rape, abuse, & etc. they are using what don’t belong to them. God just lets us use these bodies but we will also answer to him for the way we use them.

The finale of it all will be when the people of every nation take the ultimate tattoo or mark. It’s not a snake, dragon, some religious symbol; it won’t be naked women or the name of significant other but will be the “Mark of the Beast.”

Rev 13:16-17 (16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Rev 14:9-11 (9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

    I would never tattoo my body, but my husband has a great number of tattoos he got before he was saved. It saddens me when Christian people judge him by his tattoos. He’s the most Godly man I know. I worked with a young woman who had a great number of tattoos, and invited her to attend church. Her immediate reaction was, “No way! Do you have any idea of what church people say about me?” After seeing my husband, her attitude softened. Although she did not get saved, she said we were the first true Christian people she’d ever met and that if she ever decides to seek God in her life she knows where to find help. It’s important to teach our young people right and wrong regarding these issues, but we should never forget to monitor our attitudes toward others. Perhaps these “sin stains” are part of some people’s testimony and witness.

    • Thank you for visiting my blog & your comments. Many of God’s people have tattoos they got before they came to God.
      1 Peter 4:17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? KJV My question in the blog was “should CHRISTIANS wear tattoos.” There is a place in God’s kingdom for everyone regardless of how we have lived or what we have done in the past. That is a great hope!
      I have seen thousands of people converted but I don’t ever remember any of them revealing their tattoos as a witness for Christ. In fact most of them were ashamed of them but are stuck with them unless they can afford to have them removed.
